Costa del Sol Arts Societies Launch Ambitious Cultural Season Across Coast
Expats across Fuengirola, Nerja and Gibraltar prepare for a vibrant autumn calendar spanning art history, musical theatre and architectural wonders.
Autumn Lectures Mark Return of a Fixture on the Coast
Fuengirola's Salon Varietés Theatre fills with a familiar crowd this month as The Arts Society opens its 2026/27 season on the Costa del Sol. The venue, a long-serving home for English-language theatre and community events in the town, has hosted the society's talks for years and remains the natural starting point for a programme that now stretches from the western Costa del Sol to Gibraltar.
The season launches on Monday 12 October, when international art specialist Will Korner presents Art and Crime, a lecture tracing the darker corners of the art world: forged masterpieces, disputed provenance and the museum thefts that periodically make global headlines. Korner repeats the talk the following evening, Tuesday 13 October, at the Centro Cultural in Nerja, giving residents further east the chance to catch the same material without the drive to Fuengirola.
Why the Season Matters to Residents
For the thousands of British and other English-speaking residents scattered along the coast, these branches function as more than lecture clubs. They are long-running social networks built around shared language and shared curiosity, and they fill a gap that can otherwise leave retirees and long-term expats short of intellectually engaging, English-language cultural life outside the main tourist season. Organisers say ticket interest has been brisk as members return from summer trips abroad, keen to reconnect with a familiar circuit of talks, excursions and shared lunches.
That demand matters practically. Branches typically cap attendance to match venue capacity, so early booking through local branch websites is the only reliable way to guarantee a seat, particularly for headline speakers. Guest tickets are usually available for non-members wanting to sample a session before committing to annual membership, which remains the main route into the society's wider calendar of excursions to historic sites across Andalusia.
West End Names and a Twentieth Anniversary
November brings a change of register. Mark Curry, known to generations of British television viewers from his years presenting Blue Peter and now an established actor and director, takes to the stage in both Nerja and Fuengirola to unpick the staging of Wicked the musical. Audiences can expect less art history and more backstage detail: the logistics, compromises and theatrical sleight-of-hand that go into mounting a West End blockbuster, told through Curry's own career in commercial theatre. Branch organisers expect both dates to sell close to capacity given his public profile.
Further along the coast, the De la Frontera branch, based at the San Roque Golf Club, marks its twentieth year with an extended lecture series rather than a single celebratory event. It opens with Ed Glinert examining some of the world's odder skyscrapers, an architectural detour that sets the tone for a season built around unusual historical and design subjects. The anniversary gives the branch a reason to look back at two decades of programming on the western Costa del Sol, an area where English-speaking arts societies have grown alongside the retirement and golfing communities around Sotogrande and San Roque.
Gibraltar Joins the Coast-Wide Circuit
Across the border, the Garrison Library in Gibraltar adds its own strand to the autumn calendar, with talks on lost royal palaces and the excesses of extravagant monarchs. The library, one of Gibraltar's oldest cultural institutions, regularly partners with Arts Society branches on historical programming, and its inclusion this season effectively stitches Gibraltar into a single cultural circuit running from Nerja in the east to the Rock in the west.
Getting Involved
Anyone wanting to attend should check their nearest branch website before Monday's opener in Fuengirola, since guest allocations are limited and tend to go first to existing members. Beyond the lecture halls, the real draw for many is what follows: informal receptions where attendees meet the speakers directly and sign up for the group trips to historic sites around Andalusia that fill the gaps between seasons. For newcomers to the coast, it remains one of the simplest ways to find a ready-made social circle built around a shared interest rather than nationality or neighbourhood.
