Costa del Sol Mayors Demand Urgent Motorway Traffic Relief
Town leaders along the coastal strip have joined forces to demand urgent solutions to persistent traffic congestion on the A-7 and AP-7 corridor.
Town hall leaders across the western coastline have issued a collective call to the central government, demanding immediate intervention to resolve chronic traffic congestion along the Costa del Sol transport corridor. Mayors representing key municipalities between Malaga and the western resorts warned this week that daily peak-hour tailbacks on the A-7 coastal motorway have reached critical levels, harming both local business productivity and quality of life for daily commuters.
Scrapping Tolls on the AP-7
At the heart of the municipal campaign is the persistent demand to lift or heavily subsidise charges on the AP-7 toll motorway. Local leaders argue that high toll fares force thousands of delivery vehicles, service staff, and international residents onto the free A-7 bypass, leading to bottlenecks and elevated accident rates. Freeing up the toll road, representatives argue, provides an instant release valve for arterial congestion while longer-term transit upgrades remain stuck on drawing boards.
Commuter Frustrations Grow as Autumn Begins
With schools reopening and normal autumn business schedules resuming throughout September, traffic counts on the coastal artery have surged. Regular commuters between Fuengirola, Mijas, and Marbella routinely face delays extending well beyond an hour during morning rush hours. Civic associations have echoed the mayors' grievances, warning that road transport infrastructure has lagged dangerously behind the province's steady population expansion over the last five years.
Pushing for Rail and Road Investment
Alongside toll relief, the coalition of local leaders is pressing the Ministry of Transport for concrete commitments on broader strategic links, including new bypass junctions and feasibility studies for the long-promised coastal rail extension. While regional authorities continue dialogue with Madrid, local councils have pledged to maintain unified pressure until a formal timetable of road and transit solutions is delivered.
