Costa del Sol Water Pipeline Design Milestone Reached
Public water operator Acosol commissions the detailed engineering contract for a crucial supply stretch serving the far western coastal corridor.
Fresh engineering contracts have been cleared to reinforce the drinking water lifeline serving the western edge of the Costa del Sol. Public water company Acosol, operating under the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, has formally assigned a €350,263 engineering tender to upgrade the regional bulk water trunk line between Estepona and Casares, a project that directly secures long-term supply resilience for neighbouring Manilva.
The contract tasks technical consultancy Irtene SL with drafting the construction blueprint and providing works supervision for a 2.55-kilometre section stretching from the Galera stream to the MA-8300 junction. The intervention forms an essential link in the so-called regional "water motorway", designed to shuttle treated water between desalination facilities, mountain reservoirs, and fast-growing coastal communities.
Critical Infrastructure for Coastal Growth
Utility planners have labelled this segment an urgent priority to prevent supply disruptions and reduce pipe burst vulnerabilities during peak summer demand. With coastal development advancing westward, municipal water demands have expanded considerably, placing continuous pressure on older distribution conduits.
Funding for the scheme comes directly through the regional infrastructure improvement canon, meaning municipal taxpayers will see long-overdue system upgrades without unexpected local municipal rate hikes. Irtene has been allotted a 24-month execution timeframe to finalise construction drawings and guide the eventual laying of high-capacity conduits.
Safeguarding Municipal Stability
For residents in San Luis de Sabinillas, Puerto de la Duquesa, and the village core, stabilizing external water supplies remains pivotal. Manilva sits at the far perimeter of the Western Costa's joint distribution grid, historically leaving it exposed whenever primary upstream conduits faced emergency repairs.
Once completed, the new dual-flow pipeline will balance water pressure from the Rio Verde desalination plant in Marbella through to the Guadiaro valley, ensuring international homeowners and seasonal visitors enjoy uninterrupted domestic services regardless of dry spells.
