Fuengirola Christmas lights: 2.77 million LEDs set for winter
Fuengirola Christmas lights will feature over 2.77 million LED points this winter, illuminating town streets and plazas from November 27 through January 6.
Fuengirola unveils expanded Christmas illumination plan for winter season
Town officials in Fuengirola have presented full details of the upcoming municipal Christmas lighting campaign, confirming that over 2.77 million individual LED points will decorate streets, plazas, and public spaces across every neighborhood this winter. The official switch-on ceremony is scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2026, with the festive lights remaining active each evening until Three Kings Day on January 6, 2027.
The 2026 illumination plan represents a significant expansion compared to last year's festive setup. Municipal figures confirm that 2,771,512 LED points will be installed across the town, marking a clear increase of 286,797 points over the 2,484,715 bulbs utilized during the previous winter campaign. The overall installation contract covers an operational timeframe spanning from October 15, 2026, through January 31, 2027, providing technical crews ample time for assembly, ongoing maintenance, and structured dismantling once the seasonal festivities conclude.
Detailed breakdown of street displays and decorative installations
The extensive lighting grid will incorporate a wide variety of decorative elements installed along major thoroughfares and residential avenues throughout Fuengirola. The plan features 446 overhead illuminated arches spanning key streets, 164 specially decorated lampposts, and another 700 lighting elements mounted directly onto municipal streetlight poles by local municipal technical teams. In addition, 27 grouped decorative displays, 14 illuminated building facades, 63 large ground-level light sculptures, and thousands of metres of hanging garlands will cover commercial avenues and residential neighborhoods.
Energy efficiency and balanced coverage across all neighborhoods
Every lighting element within the municipal installation utilizes 100 percent LED technology, ensuring high energy efficiency and reduced electrical consumption throughout the six-week holiday period. Municipal leaders emphasized that spreading the light displays across outer districts ensures that every part of Fuengirola shares in the holiday atmosphere, rather than concentrating decorations exclusively within the primary commercial center.
Neighborhoods such as Los Boliches, El Boquetillo, Los Pacos, and Santa Amalia will receive dedicated lighting displays along their primary shopping streets. Local council officials noted that decentralizing the decorative layout encourages residents to explore local shops near their homes while spreading foot traffic across the entire municipality during the busiest shopping weeks of the year.
Plaza de Espana to serve as central focal point for visitors
As in previous years, Plaza de Espana will function as the main central gathering spot for holiday activities and visual displays. Town council organizers are planning scheduled light and music shows in the square throughout December, creating a family-friendly venue designed to attract residents and regional visitors. The planned performances will run multiple times each evening, providing a central attraction for families walking through the town center.
Fairs and Festivities Councillor Isabel Moreno outlined the goals of the seasonal project during the public presentation, stressing the role of holiday decor in community life. She noted that the town council aims to create welcoming public spaces that encourage families to walk through town, enjoy the streetscape, and take part in local traditions. She added that an attractive urban presentation gives residents a sense of pride in their town while drawing visitors from nearby municipalities across Malaga province.
Economic impact on local shops and hospitality sector
Beyond the cultural celebration, municipal leaders view the expanded lighting display as a direct economic driver for local retailers, cafes, and restaurants. December and early January represent one of the most critical trading windows of the year for small businesses in Fuengirola. Town representatives believe that bright, inviting streets encourage foot traffic, prolong evening visits, and boost sales in local shops, tapas bars, and dining establishments.
Local business associations have welcomed the early announcement and expanded coverage of the lighting grid. Shopkeepers and restaurant owners depend heavily on winter foot traffic generated by holiday events, particularly during non-summer months when international tourist numbers are lower. Municipal officials stressed that investments in public lighting yield tangible returns by keeping the local commercial sector active, supporting local employment, and positioning Fuengirola as a primary holiday shopping destination on the western Costa del Sol.
