Fuengirola Medieval Market Returns to Sohail Castle for Autumn Edition

By Costa del Sol News 5 October 2026 2 min read

Fuengirola transforms its iconic 10th-century Moorish fortress into an authentic historical village this week as the popular Medieval Market opens its gates.

The centuries-old stone walls of Castillo de Sohail in Fuengirola are ready to step back in time as the town's renowned autumn Medieval Market opens to the public this Thursday. Perched high on the coastal hill overlooking the mouth of the Fuengirola River, the historic fortress will host dozens of master craftspeople, traditional bakers, and historical re-enactors for four days of open-air festivities.

The event has grown into one of the most popular cultural highlights of the autumn calendar on the central coast, drawing thousands of expat families and regional visitors. Inside the castle courtyards, visitors will find stalls featuring hand-hammered ironwork, leather goods, handmade soaps, artisanal cheeses, and traditional wooden toys crafted by artisans travelling from across Spain.

Atmospheric Heritage by the Water

Unlike many generic commercial markets, the Sohail Castle setting provides an authentic historical backdrop that makes the event unique. Originally built in 956 AD during the Caliphate of Córdoba, the castle grounds offer sweeping panoramic vistas across the Mediterranean coastline. Falconry demonstrations, historical swordplay reenactments, and traditional medieval tavern tents serving roasted meats and spiced cider will operate continuously throughout the afternoons and evenings.

Musicians playing historical instruments, including bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, and renaissance percussion, will roam the battlements, creating an immersive historical atmosphere suitable for visitors of all generations.

Practical Details for Coastal Visitors

The market opens daily from 12:00 noon until midnight, with free admission to the castle grounds throughout the festival weekend. Visitors travelling by car are advised to use the spacious car parking areas near the Miramar shopping centre or along the beachfront promenade, as vehicle access directly up the castle hill is restricted to official event logistics.

For those travelling from Torremolinos, Benalmádena, or Málaga city, the castle sits an easy 15-minute coastal stroll from the Fuengirola Cercanías train terminus, making it an effortless cultural outing to mark the arrival of October.
