Málaga Airport Prepares for Autumn Passenger Rush as Winter Flight Schedules Open

By Costa del Sol News 13 October 2026 1 min read

Costa del Sol Airport is seeing steady October flight traffic as European carriers launch expanded winter timetables connecting the coast to British and Nordic hubs.

A steady flow of international visitors continues to pour through Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, highlighting an extended summer season that shows few signs of slowing as mid-October arrives.

Airlines operating out of Terminal 3 are transitioning into their winter timetables this week, maintaining elevated flight frequencies from key United Kingdom hubs including London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. Nordic, German, and Dutch operators have similarly expanded direct weekly services, catering to remote professionals, golf tourists, and retired residents flocking south to capitalise on mild autumn temperatures.

Extended Season Strengthens Local Commerce

Local hospitality associations in Benalmádena, Fuengirola, and Marbella report that hotel bookings and short-stay apartment rentals have stayed well above typical seasonal averages throughout early October. Warm, sunlit days reaching 26 degrees have encouraged beach clubs, golf courses, and marina terraces to remain open at full capacity.

The steady throughput of overseas passengers has also cushioned regional transport networks, with the C-1 Cercanías commuter rail link operating near full capacity between the airport and western coastal terminuses. Transport authorities are monitoring passenger volume to evaluate potential service expansions on key weekend lines.

Shifts Toward Year-Round Coastal Living

Local commercial bodies attribute the sustained autumn volume to a permanent change in visitor habits since the pandemic. A growing proportion of international arrivals are part-time residents who split their working months between Northern Europe and Andalusia, avoiding peak summer crowds while sustaining the local dining, cultural, and sports sectors through the winter.

With airport management projecting robust traffic figures across the remainder of the quarter, tourism operators along the coast are increasingly confident that the traditional winter lull is narrowing into a genuinely year-round operating cycle.
