Mayors Unite to Demand Immediate Central Action on Chronic A-7 Gridlock
Coastal town mayors demand urgent solutions to chronic motorway gridlock and push for toll relief on the AP-7.
Mayors along the western and eastern strips of the coastline have launched a unified push demanding that central transport authorities address the chronic traffic congestion choking the A-7 motorway. Routine commutes from Fuengirola and Torremolinos into Malaga now regularly result in severe multi-kilometre tailbacks, disrupting regional commerce and daily life.
Coastal Mayors Issue Direct Challenge
Local government leaders argue that routine summer traffic jams have now spilled permanently into autumn. With schools back in session, daily vehicle counts between Torremolinos and the provincial capital consistently exceed 125,000 cars per day on key bottlenecks, swamping junctions that were designed decades ago for a fraction of the current population.
In Marbella, municipal authorities reiterated urgent requests for a third lane between San Pedro Alcántara and Puerto Banús, alongside improvements to slip roads. Similarly, in Estepona, council leaders highlighted longstanding demands for direct new feeder access points at La Lobilla to relieve neighbourhood roundabouts from regional spillover.
Toll Relief on the AP-7
A focal point of the mayors' campaign is the motorway tollway. Leaders from across the province are urging the central government in Madrid to either suspend the AP-7 toll rates during peak hours or abolish them outright. Easing financial access to the toll road would immediately divert thousands of heavy vehicles and long-distance drivers off the saturated coastal dual carriageway.
Transport analysts note that until structural projects like the expanded western ring roads and the long-delayed airport northern link are delivered, the tollway represents the only immediate bypass option capable of swallowing excess volume.
Pressure on Regional Productivity
The business and hospitality sectors have thrown their weight behind the mayors' initiative. Chronic congestion on the Costa del Sol's only east-west transit artery causes widespread delays for airport logistics, regional service personnel, and domestic trade. Mayors have requested an urgent working meeting with ministry representatives to secure firm delivery calendars rather than continued feasibility studies.
