Mijas Allocates €4.25 Million to Connect Historic Pueblo to Regional Water Highway
Mijas Town Council has approved a €4.25 million project connecting the hillside pueblo directly to the western Costa del Sol water highway.
Mijas Town Council has committed €4.25 million to hook its historic hillside village into the coastal high-capacity distribution spine, safeguarding domestic supply across the upper municipality. The funding, formally cleared in the latest municipal plenary council session, will create a direct connection between the traditional streets of Mijas Pueblo and the major regional water pipeline system.
Guaranteeing Water Security
The initiative addresses longstanding vulnerabilities in local supply lines, which faced mounting stress during dry summers and increased residential demand across the hillsides. By tying directly into the strategic pipeline running parallel to the coast, town hall planners intend to insulate the pueblo from local aquifer shortages and ensure a stable, treated flow year-round.
Finance councillor Mario Bravo highlighted during the council debate that upgrading obsolete distribution networks cannot wait. The investment forms part of an expansive overhaul of aging local utility links, preventing leaks and guaranteeing high-pressure delivery to residential zones that sit several hundred metres above sea level.
Modernising Mountain Infrastructure
The project entails extensive engineering work through rugged terrain between the coastal coastal plain and the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas. Heavy pipes, modern pressure-regulation stations, and new pumping equipment will be installed along the municipal corridor, replacing decades-old pipes that are prone to line loss.
Local authorities indicated that the tender process will get under way in the coming months, with works phased to minimise disruption to daily traffic and town life. For homeowners and business operators in the village, the capital expenditure brings welcome assurance that taps will remain steady even during the peak summer tourist months.
Regional Backbone Integration
Connecting directly into the broader network known as the Costa del Sol water supply network links Mijas with desalination and treatment resources that stretch across the western coast. With weather patterns remaining unpredictable, municipalities are racing to tie every pocket of population into collective regional reservoirs.
Council officials confirmed that municipal accounts are in a healthy position to absorb the cost without impacting existing public services. Once completed, the link will give Mijas Pueblo immediate backup access to bulk water reserves during maintenance or drought conditions.
