Mijas Reports Double-Digit Drop in Annual Burglary Rates
Official municipal safety figures reveal a significant decline in break-ins and street offences across Mijas following reinforced local policing efforts.
A sustained push by local law enforcement is delivering visible results across Mijas, where newly released official data confirms that the sharp upward trend in crime seen in previous years has been successfully halted and reversed.
Significant Reductions Across Key Offences
Following an alarming surge between 2021 and 2023, when recorded criminal offences escalated significantly, the latest municipal safety audit shows conventional crime has dropped across the board. Figures published this week show residential burglaries have fallen by 23.3 per cent, while wider break-ins and burglaries dropped by 21.6 per cent across the municipality.
Violent robberies and intimidation saw an even sharper decline of 25.4 per cent, driving an overall ten per cent reduction in conventional criminal activity across urban cores and residential developments.
Increased Patrols and Coordinated Operations
Municipal safety delegate Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson attributed the turnaround to intensified operational policing, coordinated street briefings, and heightened patrols spanning Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas, and coastal residential estates.
Officers have stepped up targeted identification checks, nighttime vehicle checkpoints, and active street interventions in high-traffic commercial zones. Local authorities noted that maintaining an active, visible presence on the streets has been essential in disrupting opportunistic theft networks that previously targeted coastal villas and community apartments.
Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety
Town hall officials emphasised that despite the positive turnaround, security measures will remain rigorous heading into the autumn and winter months. Enhanced community surveillance and rapid response protocols will continue across all three districts of the municipality, reassuring international residents, businesses, and seasonal visitors that safeguarding residential neighbourhoods remains a top municipal priority.
