Ronda highway oil tanker crash, driver trapped on A367 road

Ronda highway oil tanker crash leads to complete closure of the A-367 after a heavy commercial vehicle overturned at kilometer 31, trapping the driver inside.

Overturned Vehicle Spills Oil and Blocks Both Lanes

A major traffic accident occurred late Wednesday afternoon on the A-367 highway near Ronda, when a heavy tanker truck carrying bulk vegetable oil overturned on the road. The vehicle lost control around 18:40 at kilometer 31, a stretch located within the municipal boundaries of Ronda in the Serranía de Ronda district. The crash left the driver trapped inside the crushed cab of the truck and resulted in a complete closure of the highway in both directions.

Emergency service dispatchers at 112 Andalucía received multiple urgent telephone calls from passing motorists reporting that a large tanker had flipped onto its side across the roadway. Callers reported that the driver appeared unable to free himself from the damaged cab, while oil from the tanker was spreading across the asphalt lanes.

Multi-Agency Rescue Operation at Kilometer 31

In response to the emergency calls, regional dispatchers alerted the Provincial Fire Consortium based at the Ronda fire station, Guardia Civil traffic patrols, medical teams from the 061 Health Emergency Centre, and highway maintenance crews from the Andalusian Regional Government.

Upon arrival at kilometer 31, firefighter crews immediately stabilized the heavy truck chassis to prevent further shifting before deploying specialized hydraulic rescue equipment. Firefighters worked methodically to cut away bent metal parts of the cab and safely extract the trapped driver. Once freed, the casualty was handed over to 061 emergency medical personnel on the scene. Paramedics stabilized the driver before transferring him by ambulance to the emergency department at the Serranía de Ronda Regional Hospital for further examination and medical treatment.

Total Highway Closure and Traffic Diversions

Due to the size of the overturned tanker truck and the slick oil spill covering both lanes, the General Directorate of Traffic ordered the complete closure of the A-367 highway in both directions between Ronda and Cuevas del Becerro. Guardia Civil officers redirected traffic onto alternative regional routes to prevent backlog and ensure safety.

Road maintenance crews worked for several hours at the crash site, spreading absorbent compounds across the road surface to clean up the spilled oil and neutralize the slippery conditions. Heavy specialized tow cranes were brought to the scene to upright the damaged tanker truck and tow it clear of the roadway before the route could be safely reopened to normal vehicular traffic.

Spate of Heavy Vehicle Accidents Across Málaga Province

The overturning of the oil tanker near Ronda capped a particularly hazardous Wednesday for commercial transport on Málaga roads. Earlier that same day, emergency services responded to two separate heavy vehicle rollovers in the neighboring district of Vélez-Málaga, both requiring firefighter intervention to rescue trapped operators.

In the first incident around 12:15, a 3.5-tonne light truck crashed into a roadside wall along the MA-3116 road near kilometer 2 and tipped onto its side. Firefighters freed the 20-year-old driver from the cab without full extrication tools, and he was transported to the Axarquía Hospital. Less than two hours later at 14:00, a tipper truck overturned on Camino de Torrox near Calle Arroyo, trapping its 58-year-old driver by the lower limbs. Firefighters successfully extricated the driver, who was also taken to the Axarquía Hospital for treatment in what Guardia Civil officers classified as a workplace accident.

Importance of Road Safety on Regional Arteries

The A-367 highway serves as a primary transport artery connecting the mountain city of Ronda with the interior of Málaga province toward Campillos and Antequera. The route handles significant daily commercial traffic, including agricultural tankers, distribution lorries, and local commuter vehicles.

Local authorities and transport organizations frequently remind heavy goods vehicle operators to exercise heightened caution on regional winding roads, particularly during autumn when changing weather, damp road surfaces, and seasonal agricultural transport create challenging driving conditions across the Serranía de Ronda.
