San Pedro Alcantara has found a formula for keeping its swimmers busy through the winter without asking anyone to face the open sea in November: a municipal pool, a team, and a very long distance shared out between friends. On Sunday November 15 the town holds the third edition of its Travesia a Nado Invernal, the winter swimming crossing, at the Javier Merida municipal pool.
The format is generously social. From nine in the morning to around three in the afternoon, between 150 and 200 swimmers, organised in a minimum of fifteen teams, will work their way through a joint total of 10,000 metres, using different lengths and relay changes. Members of each team take turns in the water while the rest wait at the poolside, cheering and counting, which is the whole spirit of the event: nobody swims ten kilometres alone, because nobody has to.
Entry is free, and the only price of admission is one kilogram of food per swimmer. The donation will go to local charitable organisations and causes, which turns a morning of lengths into something the town's food collections can feel. Anyone wishing to take part can register and find the full details through the QR code printed on the event posters.
The crossing is the winter cousin of the travesias a nado, the swimming crossings that are a fixture of the Spanish summer from one end of the coast to the other. In the warmer months, swimmers cross open water between coves and beaches, and the Costa del Sol calendar fills with dates for every level of ambition. But the sea cools, the days shorten, and open water becomes a discipline for the few. Moving the crossing indoors keeps the tradition alive through winter: same distance, same team spirit, water at a temperature that rewards technique rather than bravery.
Ten thousand metres sounds heroic, and it is, until it is shared. Spread across a squad, it comes to a few hundred metres per swimmer, a solid morning's swimming rather than an ordeal. Taken as a single figure, it is four hundred lengths of a standard 25 metre pool, a number that explains why the teams matter: the tally climbs fastest when the bench is loud.
Charity sport has become one of the signatures of winter on this coast. Food collections, solidarity races and donation events traditionally step up in the cold months, when demand at food banks rises and the holiday season focuses attention on those struggling. A swimming event that turns registration into a food donation fits that calendar exactly: effort in the water, help out of it.
For San Pedro, the crossing also underlines how local sport has grown beyond the obvious. The town's pool has become a year-round home for swimming, water polo and school programmes, and events like this one give amateur swimmers, triathlon hopefuls and retirees who swim every morning something to point at on the calendar. Third editions are usually the sign of an event that has found its public: the first year is an experiment, the second a confirmation, the third a tradition.
Taking part requires little: a swimming costume, goggles, a team, and a kilogram of food from the cupboard. Teams of workmates, neighbours, club swimmers or family groups all fit, and the relay format means mixed abilities swim in the same squad without anyone holding anyone back.
The third Travesia a Nado Invernal starts at nine on Sunday morning, November 15, at the Javier Merida pool. By three in the afternoon, if the maths holds, San Pedro will have covered ten thousand metres, filled a table with food for good causes, and given winter its best answer yet: keep swimming, together, indoors.
