Costa del Sol Hosts Elite Cyclists in Vuelta Stage

By Costa del Sol News 7 October 2026 2 min read

The peloton sweeps across coastal roads from Fuengirola and Marbella before battling the brutal slopes of Peñas Blancas above Estepona.

Professional road cycling has taken centre stage along the coast as Spain’s premier Grand Tour, La Vuelta a España, staged an exhilarating coastal leg through the heart of the region. Crowds lined promenades and mountain roads to watch international cycling champions race along the Mediterranean shoreline before tackling the punishing ascent towards Estepona.

Coastline Sprint from Fuengirola to Marbella

The stage commenced under radiant blue skies, charting a picturesque route along coastal avenues. Spectators gathered along the urban boulevards of Fuengirola, Mijas Costa, and Marbella, waving team banners and cheering the peloton as breakaway riders attempted early moves along the seafront avenues.

Coastal traffic was managed by local police forces and Guardia Civil outriders, who implemented rolling road closures along designated sections of the A-7 and secondary coastal avenues. Expats and holidaymakers packed outdoor café terraces along Marbella's Golden Mile to glimpse top-tier riders battling brisk Mediterranean crosswinds.

The Mountain Showdown at Peñas Blancas

While the flats provided tactical drama, the day’s decisive action unfolded on the slopes of Sierra Bermeja. The peloton turned inland toward the climb of Peñas Blancas, rising steeply above Estepona to test the endurance of world-class general classification contenders.

With gradients exceeding twelve percent on narrow switchbacks, the peloton shattered into small climbing groups. Fans lined the pine-scented mountain pass, roaring encouragement as elite climbers launched explosive attacks against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea shimmering hundreds of metres below.

High Sports Profile for the Costa del Sol

Major international sports events provide an immense global showcase for the region's outdoor athletic potential. The live television broadcast reached millions of households across Europe, highlighting scenic seaside promenades, rugged mountain passes, and year-round cycling weather.

Regional sporting directors noted that cycling tourism on the western coast continues to grow dramatically during autumn and spring months. Amateurs and semi-professional clubs regularly arrive on the Costa del Sol to train on the very same mountain ascents tackled by the world’s best riders.
