Fuengirola Steps Up Urban Pruning Programme Across Coastal Districts

Fuengirola Expands Urban Pruning Programme in Coastal Areas

Town maintenance teams are carrying out extensive tree pruning and canopy safety works across Fuengirola ahead of seasonal autumn winds.

Specialist municipal maintenance teams took to the streets across Fuengirola this month as part of an intensified town-wide tree pruning and conservation drive. The initiative, overseen by the local environment and parks department, aims to safeguard public safety, ensure overhead visibility on key driving routes, and preserve thousands of mature trees that line local avenues.

Equipped with mobile cherry-pickers and wood chippers, municipal contractors have focused efforts along high-footfall arteries, residential boulevards, and school zones. The seasonal sweep follows an assessment of coastal tree specimens that face structural strain during vigorous autumn weather fronts and gusty Mediterranean sea winds.

Targeted Intervention in High-Density Quarters

The maintenance drive is paying particular attention to established residential districts like Los Boliches, El Boquetillo, and the lower sections of Torreblanca. In these densely packed neighbourhoods, mature ficus, jacaranda, and palm canopies frequently intersect with apartment balconies, overhead utility wires, and street lighting.

Crews are pruning excessive canopy weight, removing diseased or decaying branches, and cutting back foliage that obstructs streetlamps and pedestrian walkways. The town hall confirmed that the works are scheduled street by street to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, with temporary parking suspensions clearly signposted forty-eight hours before heavy equipment moves into place.

Environmental Care and Waste Repurposing

Beyond basic safety, municipal arborists are applying seasonal treatment protocols to protect trees from invasive pests, including targeted crown inspections on local palm trees to prevent red palm weevil infestations. Proper shaping before the wet winter period encourages balanced growth when spring returns.

In line with municipal sustainability goals, organic waste generated from the pruning programme is not simply discarded into landfills. Heavy branches are processed through industrial wood chippers on site or transferred to municipal collection points, where the green clippings are converted into organic mulch and compost for use across municipal public gardens, parks, and roadside verges throughout the winter.
