Nerja British Tourism Rises Nearly 30% in 2026

By Costa del Sol News 7 November 2026 4 min read

Nerja records 44,000 British hotel guests from January to early November, a rise of nearly 30% and the fastest growth in Malaga province.

Nerja is closing 2026 as the fastest-growing destination in the province of Malaga for one of its most important groups of visitors. Hotels in the town accommodated 44,000 travellers from the United Kingdom between January and the beginning of November, an increase of nearly thirty per cent on the same period last year and the highest percentage growth in arrivals recorded anywhere in the province.

The figures were presented by the town hall as Nerja reinforced its promotion in the British market, an effort that has included participation in the forty-seventh edition of the international travel trade fair in London, where the town's representatives have been working alongside their neighbours from across the Costa del Sol and the Axarquia.

For Nerja, the British market has deep roots. The town has for decades combined a substantial resident community of British nationals with a steady flow of visitors who come for the light, the sea and the unhurried pace of the easternmost stretch of the Costa del Sol. The Balcon de Europa, the promenade balcony suspended over the Mediterranean that forms the town's postcard view, remains the first stop for most first visits, followed by the beaches and coves that run east along the rocky coastline toward the border with the province of Granada.

The growth is being read locally as a vindication of a promotion strategy that has concentrated on this exact market. British travellers to Nerja find a familiar language, familiar habits and a product that no longer needs to be explained, only improved. A town that has spent years cultivating its reputation with one nationality now has the arrival figures to show for it.

What a rise of nearly thirty per cent actually means is visible across the local economy. Hotel occupancy holds up through the shoulder months that separate the summer season from the Christmas programme. Restaurants along the old town's lanes and the seafront serve a winter clientele that many Mediterranean resorts envy. Owners of holiday accommodation find their calendars fuller for longer. And the wider region benefits: Nerja sits at the gateway of the Axarquia, the region that climbs from the sea into the mountains toward villages such as Frigiliana, whose white lanes and old sugar cane heritage give the area a second attraction within minutes of the coast. Day trips from the coast have become an important part of what the area sells, and Nerja's growth feeds them directly.

The presentation of the figures in London was as much about next year as about the closing weeks of this one. With the World Travel Market in town, Nerja's delegation took the message to the operators and media that shape how the British market sees the Costa del Sol, backed by numbers that make the argument on their behalf: nearly thirty per cent more arrivals, forty-four thousand hotel guests from the United Kingdom in a single year, and the strongest percentage growth of any destination in the province of Malaga.

For a town of Nerja's size, forty-four thousand hotel guests from one country is not a statistic; it is a second season. It fills the terraces of the Balcon de Europa on winter afternoons, keeps the beaches busy on bright February days, and gives local businesses a reason to stay open through the months when the summer crowds are gone.

The task now, as the town hall sees it, is to hold what has been won: to keep the growth coming without spoiling the character that produced it. On the evidence of 2026, Nerja has the rare problem of managing success, and the rarer one of doing it with the market that knows it best already on its side.
