Nerja Coastal Cliff Stabilization: New €2m Government Tender

By Costa del Sol News 27 September 2026 1 min read

A major coastal engineering contract will reinforce the cliff beneath the Parador de Nerja and reopen the footway to Carabeíllo beach.

Coastal protection in eastern Málaga has taken a substantial step forward as Spain's central government officially opened a two-million-euro tender to shore up the unstable cliff face below the Parador hotel in Nerja.

The project targets the precipitous rock walls overlooking Burriana beach, where past rockfalls and erosion have compromised cliffside footpaths and raised safety concerns for beachgoers. Under the engineering schedule released this week, prospective contractors have until 26 October at 7:00 pm to submit their bids through a simplified open procurement procedure.

Shoring Up Burriana and Restoring Lost Access

The planned works focus primarily on the vertical crags flanking eastern Nerja. Out of the total envelope, €727,905 is earmarked strictly for securing the rock overhangs using specialised geotechnical anchoring, micropiles and retaining walls designed to prevent further deterioration.

Crucially for pedestrians and regular beachgoers, another €433,981 will restore the dedicated accessible path linking Burriana beach to Carabeíllo beach. The connection has suffered intermittent closures due to falling debris, cutting off an scenic route popular with tourists and locals strolling between the town's eastern coves.

Timeline and Environmental Integration

Beyond basic structural reinforcement, the specifications require €113,885 dedicated to aesthetic integration and landscaping, ensuring that heavy concrete and steel supports blend naturally into the Mediterranean coastline rather than blighting the cliff edge. Further funds will cover site safety, waste removal and environmental monitoring.

Civil works are scheduled to begin on site in November 2026, barring legal objections during the tendering period. Once ground crews receive site handover, construction will run for an estimated ten months, aiming for completion ahead of the peak summer holiday season in 2027.
