Senda Litoral Coastal Boardwalk Closes Key Gaps Between Mijas and Fuengirola

By Costa del Sol News 11 October 2026 2 min read

New wooden boardwalk stretches along the Mediterranean shoreline connect coastal towns, boosting accessibility and winter walking routes for residents.

Engineers and municipal work crews have completed another essential coastal segment of the provincial Senda Litoral footpath, bridging a previously disconnected stretch between Mijas Costa and the western edge of Fuengirola. The newly opened path replaces rough shoreline passages with elevated treated-wood decking and panoramic view platforms, creating a seamless route for morning runners, cyclists, and dog walkers.

Uniting the Mediterranean Coastline

The initiative, championed by provincial authorities alongside local town halls, aims to connect all 180 kilometres of the Malaga provincial coastline from Manilva in the west to Nerja in the east. The newly finished section near El Faro eliminates dangerous roadside detours along the busy A-7 motorway, steering pedestrian traffic directly alongside the shoreline rocks and sandy bays.

Local residents have welcomed the opening, which features gentle ramps designed to accommodate prams and wheelchairs. Energy-efficient solar lighting along the balustrades ensures safe passage during early morning strolls and after sunset, adding substantial day-to-day value for beachfront communities.

Boosting Year-Round Outdoor Living

For English-speaking expats and international visitors, the expansion of the Senda Litoral represents a major lifestyle enhancement. Cafes, chiringuitos, and family-run seaside kiosks along the newly linked route report an immediate uptick in footfall, extending the active commercial season well past the traditional summer months.

Town planners highlighted that building on unstable cliffs and marine preservation zones required strict environmental assessments. The timber structures are anchored with non-invasive pilings designed to withstand winter sea swells while protecting native coastal dunes and maritime flora.

Next Stages Heading East and West

With this junction operational, public works teams will turn their focus towards finalising remaining gaps further west towards Estepona and along the rugged headlands of the eastern coast. Regional delegates confirmed that funding allocations for remaining boardwalk links have been ring-fenced to ensure uninterrupted progress throughout the winter, bringing the vision of a continuous pedestrian promenade across the entire Costa del Sol within reach.
