Torremolinos Takes Its Tourism Pitch to London's Buses
Torremolinos advertises on two London buses until 30 November and backs the campaign with its presence at the London travel trade fair.
Torremolinos has taken its tourism message to the streets of London, launching a municipal campaign that puts the resort's name on two of the city's iconic double-decker buses for a full month.
The campaign, announced by the town hall, runs until 30 November on the two vehicles, carrying the colours of the Costa del Sol resort through the heart of the British capital at the moment of year when many British households begin planning their winter escape. A second element of the campaign has just finished: until 5 November, the same message also filled a large screen at London Bridge, one of the busiest transport interchanges in the city, seen daily by huge numbers of commuters and visitors. Few advertising spaces in Europe reach so concentrated a daily audience of exactly the travellers the resort wants to meet.
The timing is not accidental. The campaign coincides with the travel industry's annual gathering in London, the World Travel Market, where destinations from across the world spend three days presenting themselves to British tour operators, airlines and travel media. Torremolinos has been present at the fair, and the buses extend the effort from the exhibition halls into the streets, keeping the resort in view of the very people it wants to tempt.
The municipality has not been alone in the capital. This week a delegation of mayors and tourism officials from across the province of Malaga has been working London, with the leaders of Torrox, Torremolinos, Nerja, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas and Rincon de la Victoria all in the city to strengthen their relationships with the British market, which for most of their towns is the largest single source of visitors.
For Torremolinos, the arithmetic is simple. The United Kingdom has been the resort's principal market for decades, ever since the package holiday boom turned a quiet fishing village into one of the first mass tourism destinations in Spain in the 1960s, and it remains the nationality that fills its hotels through the winter. A campaign on London's buses is not a novelty purchase: it is an investment aimed squarely at the customers who keep the town's occupancy figures healthy in the months when the sun-seeking crowds of summer thin out.
The choice of November matters for the same reason. The weeks between the October half term and Christmas are when British travellers decide, and book, their winter sun. A resort that appears on the daily commute during those weeks is present at the exact moment the decision is made. The campaign on the two buses, running until the end of the month, keeps that presence going long after the trade fair stands have been packed away. The overlap is deliberate: fair, buses and screen all speak to the same audience in the same weeks.
Torremolinos has spent recent years broadening what it offers that market. The town has promoted itself as an open and inclusive destination, invested in its seafront promenade and its cultural calendar, and positioned itself within the wider Costa del Sol offer that stretches from Malaga city to the beaches of the western coast. For the British visitor, the essentials have not changed: a short flight, a mild winter, a long promenade and an evening economy that starts early and finishes late.
The London buses are the most visible expression of that patient work. For a month, the resort rides through the English capital in its brightest colours, an advertisement for winter sun moving through the November drizzle. The town hall will measure the result not in impressions but in arrivals, in hotel occupancy and in the bookings that British tour operators place for the coming season.
Until 30 November, Torremolinos keeps its place on the streets of London. After that, the resort hopes, the relationship does the rest.
